Peru Day 6: Over Salkantay Pass then down into the Jungle

Wake up time - 4:30 AM.  Pack up, eat and then head out just as its getting light.  This would be our longest day with about 13 miles of hiking.  We all thought the up hill to 15,000 + feet would be the hard part.  Oh no.  The down hill for 6,000 feet was hard.  Our legs and knees were falling off.  Our Horse Men and chef passed us carrying our heavy bags and all the food.  Lots of time to talk and enjoy the surroundings.

We finally made it to the pass.  What a spiritual spot.  I could have stayed up there for ever.  I wished for silence and peace but we had to keep moving.  There was a major, I mean MAJOR, avalanche/rock slide last year.  We were one of the first groups to come back through and see the total devastation.  The slide went on for miles and wiped out homes and villages.  all the trees were gone, there were countless slides, roads and trails were wiped out.

We made it down to our lunch spot.  The spot used to be a busy hub but ... COVID.  The food and chairs were amazing.  The quick nap and soaking feet in the river were refreshing.  But then on you go for 6 more hours.  We wouldn't even believe it... so much more hiking!

We dropped 6,000 feet.  The golden corn flowers were a favorite.  The jungle got warm and brought lots of bugs.  We were grateful for trails.  We were told the third day was no hiking.  The trails were completely washed out.
