Kodachrome Day 3

Sunday- Mothers Day!
We just wanted to go on a nice simple hike But that is tricky when I didn't know exactly where the Slot canyon started.  So we hike about 3 miles round trip in the wrong direction.  When we finally made it back to the cars we saw the trail head just to our left.  Then the bad weather started in and we got in the car and drove straight home.  It was a great weekend!

Our campsite was great.  Beautiful weather.  The kids built a water dam.

Kodachrome Day 2

Saturday- Slot canyon by Kodachrome Basin
South of Cannonville

  • Bull Valley Gorge - 2-4 hours- more of a hike near Dunham Canyon, short 10m rope - muddy https://www.roadtripryan.com/go/t/utah/escalante/bullvalley
This was a super cool Gorge.  It was fascinating to see the truck wedged between the slot canyon walls.  Sad story about the three fathers whose car rolled off the edge 50+ years ago.  Hiking out of the Gorge was the worst part but not bad.  It was just hot as we hiked up and out.

After Lunch-
  • Dunham Canyon - 3-4 hours- No water -two 83 ft rappel- A nice half day outing. Could need to set a deadman for last rappel https://www.roadtripryan.com/go/t/utah/escalante/dunham-slot
Beautiful.  The kids all did great with the Rappelling.  We loved getting to the end and reaching the river.  We cooled off and then headed out.  Again... hiking out is always the hardest part.

  • Kodachrome State Park- Angel’s Palace and Shakespeare Arch good hikes. We ended up not doing any hikes in Kodachrome.  Shakespeare arch had fallen.
  • Willis Creek Slot - 1-3 hours- 2A small flowing stream all year - need wading shoes- We didn't make it to Wills Creek.  Another time.

Red Rocks outside of Bryce Canyon #1

Finally!!! We got to get out.  A much needed camping trip.  We headed down to Panguitch and turned off to go to Bryce.  We stopped outside of Bryce Canyon at Red Rocks.  Reviews said it was just as lovely and less crowded then Bryce.  All the state parks have been closed but Bryce was opening this weekend so we avoided it.  We started as a family biking the Thunder Mountain Trail.  Abby and I did about 4 miles.   Darren rode on with Tyler and Ella through the beautiful red rocks.  (We wanted to stop at the Mossy Cave Trail to enjoy the waterfall but because of Covid 19 it was all shut down.)

Friday
North of Cannonville

  • Thunder Mountain and red canyon hiking area=- 16 miles. - difficult
  • Mossy Cave Trail- Little trail to waterfall and alcove

After the ride at Thunder Mountain we met up with our friends the Larrabees.  The boys went for another bike ride and the younger kids and Amber and I went to hike the Golden Wall trail to Castle Bridge Trail.  It was a lovely short loop to see some Hoodos.

After hiking and biking we headed a little farther south to Kodachrome State Park.  It was beautiful.  We were lucky to get a camping spot- someone had cancelled so we snatched it up.
