Week 19: A Very Lovely End

Week 19: 12/31/2024 ‼️HAPPY NEW YEAR‼️

December has got to be the best month ever. I hope Christmas was amazing and that you are excited for a new year! 2025 is going to be so awesome! I finally ate it on the ice this week. It was only a matter of time. It makes for a good picture though.

Spiritual Thought:

Part of a scripture jumped out at me this week.

Helaman 14:9 — “And behold…Cry unto this people, repent and prepare the way of the Lord.

I love the phrase “prepare the way of the Lord”

As a new year begins,

How have you “prepared the way of the Lord” into your heart, mind, and life in the past?

How are you preparing and letting Him into your life right now

Most importantly, how will you “prepare the way of the Lord” this new year?

I know, if we include God in our lives we, “shall all be amazed, and wonder” at all God can help us do.

“God doesn’t care nearly as much about where you have been as He does about where you are, and with His help, where you are willing to go.(Holland)

I'm so excited to let God be the biggest part of my life this year as I “prepare the way” for him.

To pray about even the smallest decisions, include him in my studies, read his words, and become more like Jesus Christ.

And the best part is you don't even have to be a missionary to do any of this.

Because God “inviteth all to come unto him and partake of his goodness”

I am so excited for this new year and new ways to “prepare the way of the Lord” into my heart, mind, and life.

Because I know that with the way of the Lord, you can go anywhere, become anything and overcome everything

Short Version of Email: Christmas was so lovely. Think about how you will “Prepare the way of the lord” into your life this year. The members are so

nice to us we were invited over a lot. Christmas conference was awesome!

Finnish Word of the Week:    Hukassa - - “Lost”, but literally translates to “in a wolf”

5 Amazing Things This Week:

1: We spent Christmas Eve at the Bishop's house, his family has become like my second family here. They have taken me under their wing because I was trained here. We had AMAZING food, so much chocolate, and played some fun games. They even had “Skull King”.

2: On Christmas Day we went over to another ward members house in the afternoon. We got to go sledding with the kids, play in the snow, play an old Nintendo, bake a traditional Finnish Christmas food, and eat some really really good food too. It was amazing.

3: On Boxing Day (the day after Christmas Day) we got invited to another member's house who probably has the coolest, prettiest house I've ever seen in my life. She also lives in the middle of Lappeenranta Fortress which makes it even better. Imagine like the most perfectly decorated Hallmark movie house and then whatever you thought of, up it by 90%. Also it was the best food I've eaten in my entire time in Finland which is saying a lot because I've eaten so good here.

4: We had a Christmas Conference which was the highlight of my whole week. There were so many missionaries to meet it was amazing. We also ate chocolate fondue and pizza! President and his wife are so amazing. They talked to us and the Spirit was definitely there. I had to play the piano after he talked which was scary (because you cannot possibly hope to add on to the spirit after Pres and his Wife speak) but hopefully I added something.

5: We have been working on diversifying our contacting methods and using all the ways we can to find people- ie, social media, street contacting, housing, inactive member lists, ward member referrals, what's app messaging ect. It has been fun to get creative and try and find new people in new ways.

Tender Mercy of the Week:

We had a friend who we were teaching but had to stop because her husband said he didn't want her to meet with us. But we referred her to the sister missionaries and they are meeting over the phone. Our friend put herself on a baptism date! We are really excited to see what happens. She may be getting baptized early February!

Where I am/Who I'm With: I am serving in Lappeenranta. My companion is Elder Goodrich.

Shoutout Elder Goodrich he is the best ever. He put so much effort into making my first Christmas here so good. He is such a great guy.

Scripture of the Week:

D&C 1:23 That the fulness of my gospel might be proclaimed by the weak and the simple unto the ends of the world, and before kings and rulers.

My thoughts: This could be looked at just as a missionary scripture because I know that not everyone is constantly proclaiming the gospel. But, I love how the “weak” and “simple” are meant to bring about a good thing. Be bold, and be confident in yourself because although you might feel weak and simple, this verse is another reminder to me that God uses “weak” and “simple” people to accomplish mighty things.

Talk of the Week:  “17 Points of the True Church- - - Floyd Weston  - - -

My Thoughts: This was a really cool story about a guy with a photographic memory who had compiled 17 points from the Bible about what the “true” (as in closest to the church Jesus started when he was on the earth) church is and went and looked for it. It was a super cool story and had some awesome moments. Highly worth a listen!

Happy New Year!

Christmas 2024

We had a lovely dinner and nativity at Jenny's house the Sunday before Christmas.  Pretty fun to have two nephews with girlfriends there.  I don't feel old enough for that.

Abby got a new bedroom set and a Minki blanket for Christmas.  She is a fun little designer.  We also got to talk to Tyler for Christmas.  We missed him, and I know he missed us, but we all know he is in a great place.  We took care of Smokie Bear over the holidays while Chad and their family were in Tahiti.  We sure love a cuddly dog.

I loved the slow pace of Christmas time.  We went downtown one night to walk around and see some fun sights.  The Nutcracker Treasure Hunt.  The Gallivan Center. Ride Trax. Temple Square. Grand America windows and Gingerbread House, and Maceys/ZCMI windows.
Christmas break was so nice we skied and bike and hiked!
Cousin Ely crocheted his cousin's snowflakes.

Week 18: Finland is a Death Trap- Merry Christmas Though

Merry Christmas‼️🎄🎅 (I tried to find a Jesus emoji but there isn’t one)

Have an incredible Christmas!! I love and miss you all so much! Thank you to everyone who has sent emails or Christmas cards to me! They are better than any other gift I could receive.

Shoutout to everyone back home at CCHS for raising an absolutely incredible amount of money for charity! Such hard work.

Elder Goodrich and I played “Ticket to Ride -Northern Lights Edition”. It was so fun and the board was so beautiful.

We also put up some Christmas decorations around our apartment that we found in the closet. It is so much fun to have Christmas lights and a mini tree!

Spiritual Thought:

I just want you to sit down.

Say a prayer.

Set a timer for 5 minutes.

And think about Christmas.

What it really means to you, whatever that may be.

Write it down in a journal or on your phone.

Just take time to be still,

And to think about your reason for the season.

Short Version of Email: Think about Christmas, what it means to you. It is so cold. I ran a long way to not miss a train. Finland has amazing members. Our friend made it through the Isaiah chapters. I sang some cool Finnish songs.

Finnish Word of the Week:    Moottorisaha - - Chainsaw, but literally translates to “Engine-saw”

Daylight Counter!

Saturday was the Winter Solstice. (the greatest day of the year) It's getting lighter from now on!!!!

 Last week–5 Hours 4 minutes

This week–4 Hours 40 minutes

5 Amazing Things This Week:

1: Church on Sunday. I still can't understand a thing, but seeing the members is by far the best part of my week. I love that I can feel the same Spirit back home and in Finland!

2: At District Council we made some really good tacos; that took a long, long, long time to cook. As we finished eating, we looked at our phones and realized we had 15 minutes to make it to the train station. A 30 minute walk away. We made it, but boy was it close. I haven't ran that fast in a long long time.

3:  It was -2 degrees Fahrenheit this week and then it warmed up, rained a ton, and went back to being below freezing. This means that literally every surface in Finland is a sheet of ice 2 inches thick. I have fallen many times.

4: It isn't even Christmas yet but the members have had us over for dinner 4 different times this week and given us lots of chocolate! Finland has the best members ever.

5: After attending a member's, extended family Christmas dinner/birthday party for her son, they took us with them to a local church to sing Finnish Christmas songs. It was super super cool.

Tender Mercy of the Week:

We had a lesson with our friend Saisindu this week after not meeting often with him because he wasn't progressing.

We had given him a Book of Mormon though. We went to go check up on him and share a quick message about Christmas. As he greeted us he sat down and joyfully exclaimed that he had read all of First and Second Nephi. He then asked us some questions about it and my comp and I were in complete shock. He even made it past the Isaiah chapters!! He told us his life has gotten so much better as he started reading the BOM. I still can't believe it. Yay for Saisindu! Hopefully we can keep meeting with him.

Where I am/Who I'm With: I am serving in Lappeenranta. My companion is Elder Goodrich.

Scripture of the Week:

Mosiah 25:10

10 And again, when they thought of the immediate goodness of God, and his power in delivering Alma and his brethren out of the hands of the Lamanites and of bondage, they did raise their voices and give thanks to God.

My thoughts: I love the phrase “the immediate goodness of God”. It is easy for me to see how good God is.
The earth, the lovely people on it, a Savior, Christmas time, my friends and family, all show me how good God has been to me.

Talk of the Week:  ““A Teacher Come from God” (April 1998)

- - - Jeffrey R. Holland  - - -

My Thoughts: Good teachers are so important and shape others in so many ways. We will all have the chance to be a teacher at some point in our life.

–“Effective teaching is the very essence of leadership in the church”

–“Do not make our faith hard to detect”

–“Don't supply only the superficial when the substantial is needed”

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Have a very Merry Christmas,

Elder Balls

**The subject line of this email relates to the ice. Just walking to the store today I couldn't even walk normally because of the inch thick layer of ice everywhere. It is so scary ahh
